Quick Seasonal Snapshot
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are widely considered the sweet spots: daytime highs sit in the low-to-mid 20s °C across most tourist areas, nights are cool but rarely freezing, and rainfall is minimal. Summer (June–August) brings 30–35 °C in Amman and Petra, 38–42 °C in Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea, with almost zero rain. Winter (December–February) sees 10–14 °C days in the highlands, occasional frost at night, and the country's only reliable rainfall — though the Dead Sea stays a mild 20 °C.
Destination-by-Destination Breakdown
Amman and the northern hills sit at 700–1,000 m, so evenings feel fresh year-round; pack a light jacket even in July. Petra shares similar elevation but feels warmer in direct sun — layers you can peel off are essential. Wadi Rum is classic desert: scorching midday summer highs, but winter nights can dip below 5 °C, so bring insulation for overnight camps. The Dead Sea sits 430 m below sea level, delivering the warmest winters in Jordan and humid, intense summer heat; a wide-brim hat and high-SPF sunscreen are non-negotiable.
Rain, Wind & Other Surprises
Almost all rain falls between November and March, usually as brief showers rather than days of drizzle. Flash floods can occur in narrow wadis (including Petra's Siq) after heavy rain — check local advice before hiking. The khamsin, a hot, dusty southeasterly wind, occasionally blows in spring and autumn, reducing visibility and spiking temperatures for a day or two; it passes quickly.
Packing Cheat-Sheet
Year-round: sturdy walking shoes, sun protection, reusable water bottle. Spring/autumn: T-shirts, light fleece, wind-proof shell. Summer: breathable linen/cotton, loose long sleeves for sun and cultural sites, electrolyte sachets. Winter: warm mid-layer, waterproof jacket, hat and gloves for desert nights. Modest clothing (covered shoulders/knees) is respectful at religious and rural sites regardless of season.
Choosing Your Travel Window
For hiking Petra's back trails or camping in Wadi Rum, target April–May or October–early November. If your focus is floating in the Dead Sea and city exploration in Amman, winter offers pleasant warmth and fewer crowds. Summer works for budget travellers who tolerate heat and book early-morning site visits — just hydrate relentlessly. Whenever you go, Jordan's varied elevations mean you can often escape uncomfortable temperatures with a short drive.
