Jordan's summer temperatures can climb well above 35°C, especially in desert areas like Petra and Wadi Rum. With a bit of preparation, you can still enjoy the country's iconic landscapes comfortably and safely.

Plan Your Day Around the Heat

Start activities early, ideally before 10 am, when sites like Petra open and temperatures are lower. Reserve midday for shaded museums, indoor attractions in Amman, or a long lunch in a cool restaurant. Late afternoon, after 4 pm, is another good window for outdoor exploration.

Stay Hydrated and Protected

Carry more water than you think you'll need — at least 2–3 litres per person per day. Wear a wide-brimmed hat, UV-blocking sunglasses, and loose, light-coloured clothing made from natural fabrics. Apply high-SPF sunscreen regularly, especially at the Dead Sea where reflection off the water intensifies exposure.

Choose Experiences That Beat the Heat

The Dead Sea's mineral-rich waters and mud treatments offer natural cooling, while many resort spas provide air-conditioned relaxation. In Wadi Rum, opt for a sunset jeep tour or an overnight camp where evening breezes bring relief. Petra's Siq provides some shade, but the Monastery and High Place of Sacrifice are fully exposed — save them for early morning.

Know the Signs of Heat Exhaustion

Watch for dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, or confusion in yourself and fellow travellers. If symptoms appear, move to shade immediately, sip cool water, and dampen clothing. Seek medical help if conditions don't improve within 15 minutes. Most hotels and tour operators in tourist areas are well-equipped to assist.
