The Big Three Beyond Petra
Wadi Rum is the desert of every imagination โ rock bridges, red dunes, jeep tracks, and Bedouin camps under an absurdly starry sky. Stay the night; the sunset-to-sunrise arc is the point.
The Dead Sea delivers the strangest swim of your life at 430 metres below sea level, and pairs a float with mineral mud and resort spas. It is barely an hour from Amman, which makes it the perfect trip finale.
Jerash, north of the capital, is one of the best-preserved Roman provincial cities in the world. The moment the Oval Plaza opens out in front of you rivals any single view at Petra.
The North Most Visitors Skip
Umm Qais stacks black basalt ruins above the Sea of Galilee with views into three countries, and its restored heritage village is one of Jordan's loveliest dinner spots.
As-Salt, UNESCO-listed for its Ottoman-era harmony, is all golden stone stairways and friendly shopkeepers โ a half-day of pure wandering.
Ajloun adds a proper castle and one of the country's rare green forests, best in spring when the hills are briefly, gloriously soft.
Nature That Surprises People
Dana Biosphere Reserve is Jordan's largest protected area: a stone village on a canyon rim, the 14 km Wadi Dana trail, and eco-lodges at the bottom of the world. Hikers routinely call it their favourite day in the country.
Wadi Mujib's Siq Trail โ wading a river canyon between orange walls to a waterfall โ is the most fun you can have below sea level. It is seasonal, so check it is open before you plan around it.
Two Wildcards
Aqaba turns a history-heavy itinerary into a beach holiday for a day or two: coral reefs, warm water, and fresh fish grilled at the harbour.
Little Petra (Siq al-Barid), minutes from the main site, shows you painted Nabataean interiors in near-solitude โ the perfect epilogue to the famous city next door.
How to Fit Them In
A 7-day route comfortably covers Amman, Jerash, Petra, Wadi Rum, and the Dead Sea; ten days adds Dana, Aqaba, and the northern loop. Our 7-day Jordan itinerary maps the classic version day by day, the road trip guide has driving times for every leg, and the hidden gems page goes deeper on the quiet corners locals love.
Most of these sites are covered by the Jordan Pass โ see our Jordan Pass guide for the maths before you buy anything at a gate.
