Crossing King Hussein Bridge: Hours, Tips & What to Expect

The Jordanian authorities occasionally adjust operating hours for holidays, security situations or administrative reasons. As a rule, the bridge operates Sunday–Thursday from early morning until late afternoon, with reduced hours on Saturday and closures on certain Islamic and Jordanian public holidays. Friday is typically closed or very limited. Always verify the latest timetable on the official Jordanian border authority website or via your tour operator the day before you travel, as changes can be announced at short notice.

Most nationalities can obtain a Jordan Pass (which waives the single-entry visa fee) online before arrival — highly recommended to speed things up. Bring your passport (valid six months minimum), a printed copy of your Jordan Pass or visa, and any required entry permits for the West Bank side. There is an exit fee on the Israeli/Palestinian side and a small service fee on the Jordanian side; carry small denominations in USD, JOD or NIS. Travellers on organised tours often have paperwork handled by their guide.

1) Exit Israeli/Palestinian terminal → baggage scan → passport control. 2) Shuttle bus across the no-man's-land (5–10 min, included in exit fee). 3) Enter Jordanian terminal → baggage scan → visa/passport control → customs. The whole process can take 1–3 hours depending on queues. Luggage porters with official vests are available for a tip. Solo women and families are generally processed respectfully; dress modestly and keep documents accessible.

From the Jordanian terminal, licensed taxis and pre-booked transfers wait outside. Amman is ~50 min (45 km) via the Dead Sea Highway — a scenic descent with panoramic views. The Dead Sea resorts are 20–30 min away; Petra is ~2.5 hr south via the Desert Highway or the slower, spectacular Kings Highway. Wadi Rum is ~3.5 hr south. Many travers book a private driver for the first leg, then join multi-day tours from Petra or Aqaba. Shared minibuses to Amman's Abdali station run when full — cheaper but less predictable.

Travel light — you'll handle your bags multiple times. Avoid Fridays and major holidays (Eid, Christmas, Easter) when crowds peak. Download offline maps of the Jordanian terminal area. Have a local SIM or eSIM ready for ride-hailing apps (Careem, Uber) once through customs. If continuing straight to Petra or Wadi Rum, confirm your driver's contact and vehicle details before you cross. Finally, keep a photocopy of your passport and Jordan Pass separate from the originals.
